From a simple vision to a thriving community, follow the story of Independence Pathway and see what we accomplish together each year.
In the summer of 2024, People’s Church shared a call to action with its congregation. A young man who had just aged out of foster care had a roof over his head but nothing else but the clothes on his back and a need for the basic essentials most of us take for granted.
Adam Barton was among those in the congregation who were moved to help. But instead of simply donating, Adam asked if he could also accompany the pastor to meet the young man personally. That visit changed everything!
The home provided shelter, but it wasn’t quite the safe, stable environment every young adult deserves. During the visit, Adam witnessed firsthand the challenges the young man faced, including the residents verbally berated by the landlord in front of the visitors. While that moment was difficult to witness, it wasn't about one landlord or one home. It revealed a much larger reality: having a place to stay is not the same as having stability, support, guidance, and a genuine opportunity to succeed.
Adam left that day asking a simple but powerful question: "How can we do better?"
He brought what he had witnessed to a small group of trusted friends who shared a heart for serving others. Those conversations quickly turned into planning sessions, and before long, Adam Barton, Brittany Hudson, Chris Martin, Tony Acosta, and Marshall Turner came together to form the founding board of Independence Pathway.
From the beginning, our vision has been about more than providing temporary assistance. We believe every young adult deserves the opportunity to build a stable, independent future. This means providing not only safe housing when needed, but also mentorship, life skills, employment support, educational opportunities, and a community of people who would genuinely invest in their success.
What began with one young man's story quickly became a shared mission: to ensure that no young adult has to navigate adulthood alone simply because they aged out of foster care or lack a support system. Today, that mission continues to grow.
Independence Pathway now provides both residential and non-residential programs designed to equip young adults with the tools they need to thrive. Through safe housing, life skills training, educational support, career development, financial literacy, mentorship, and meaningful community connections, we help young adults build not just independence—but confidence, purpose, and lasting stability.
Although our programs have expanded, our heart has never changed. Every young adult who comes through our doors is more than a participant—they are an individual with unique strengths, goals, and potential. We remain committed to walking alongside each person, celebrating every milestone, overcoming every obstacle together, and reminding them that they are never alone.
Because lasting independence isn't built by just providing a place to stay—it is built through relationships, opportunity, and the unwavering belief that every young adult deserves the chance to succeed.
